Game Recap: Men's Soccer Ties Salem
The Montgomery County Community College men's soccer team added another tie to its record Saturday. In double overtime action, the Mustangs closed their second game of the season with a 1-1 draw against the Salem Community College Oaks.
The game was even-handed, with both team registering 13 shots on goal. In the first half the Oaks started with a strong offensive pressure but were eventually worn down by the Mustangs. Just before half time, Mustangs sophomore Corey Signore (Souderton Area High School) stole the ball off a botched defensive clear by Salem to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
Trailing 0-1 after the break, the Oaks amped up the intensity. They were able to tie up the game at 1-1 when an attacking forward headed in a corner kick early in the half. The remainder of regular play was back and forth, with the Mustangs' best chance being a just-wide penalty kick at 80:00.
Both overtime periods showcased more of the same from each team. In the first overtime, freshman forward Tymere Davis (Upper Dublin High School) almost gave the Mustangs the win with a break away shot that barely missed the net. After two overtime sessions, the game was ended in a 1-1 tie, the second of the season for the Mustangs, who are now 0-0-2.
Mustangs Head Coach Matt Giordano commented on the stellar defensive performance of his squad. "I am very proud of the way our defense played," he said. "The shut down and denied Salem a number of good scoring opportunities. Also, Edgar Ojeda (Souderton Area High School) played excellent in goal, coming up with some big saves to protect our net."
