Late Comeback leads Lehigh Carbon past Baseball

Lehigh Carbon traveled to Montgomery on Monday to attempt to slow the Mustangs down. The Mustangs needed to win four out of their last five games in order to both win a share of the EPAC title and grab a playoff spot. They had won three heading into today's game, and had won five of the last six.

Right from the start, the game looked to be a high scoring one. Lehigh grabbed 1 run in the top of the first and the Mustangs answered with three of their own. However, the fast start was fairly misleading, as both teams would only score three total runs till the eighth inning. One of those was a Home Run from Ron Fausgnaught, who seemed to get back in his midseason form after a short slump. Alex Bernhard started the game for the Mustangs and finished with 6 IP, 5 K and 2 ER on 5 H.

The game would not stay this low scoring. In an incredibly rare sight, Luke Deleo allowed four earned runs in the 8th and the 9th, despite having an ERA less than 1.00 for almost all of the season. Unfortunately, the Mustangs were never truly able to reach the same level of play that they had in the first inning, as they did not have a hit past the 5th inning. Lehigh's strong pitching staff closed the game out and the Mustangs fell 7-5.

Unfortunately, this means the end of the Mustangs' EPAC championship run, as Lehigh Carbon has now clinched the title. However, Montgomery can still reach .500 with a win at Delaware County Community College on Tuesday.
