Recap: Men's Basketball Drops First Game to Pioneers

The Mustangs men's basketball team fell 74-85 to the Pioneers of Anne Arundel Community College Saturday.

The first half of the game was a virtual dead head, with the Mustangs leading by one or two points for the majority of play. With two minutes left the Pioneers turned up the intensity, but the Mustangs went on a six point scoring streak to take a 41-36 lead. The Pioneers called a time out to regroup, but could not bounce back. At half the Mustangs entered the locker room with a 43-39 lead over the Pioneers.

In the second half the Pioneers jumped out to a solid start over the Mustangs, earning five points in a row to steal the lead. The Mustangs held the score close, battling for a lead that bounced back and forth until the Pioneers started to slip away. With 8:22 left, the Pioneers were up 61-56. Two minutes later, they increased their lead to nine points. The Mustangs kept pace but could not rally to recover the deficit. 

Ultimately the Mustangs lost by 11 points in their first regulation game of the season.

Sophomore starter Jah'lil Williams led the Mustangs with the team's only double-doubl of the evening. Williams notched 14 points and 11 rebounds. Teammates Omar Askia and Greg Mendrzycki followed Williams in points with 12 and 17 respectively. Freshman Dmitri Burton logged seven rebounds in the match.
