Woods Reaches 500-Point Milestone

NANTICOKE, Pa. - Within four points of 500, second-year guard Kevin Woods had hoped to eclipse the career milestone in front of family and friends in the home finale on Feb. 9. However, Old Man Winter played the role of spoiler as the men's scheduled game with Ocean that night was canceled due to snow.

Four days later and some 99 miles away, Woods stepped onto the hardwood for the final time as his Mustangs locked up with the Trailblazers of Luzerne County Community College. Woods hit a field goal to pull within two of the target before draining a pair of free throws for Point #499 and Point #500.

Play stopped as Head Men's Basketball Coach Denny Surovec walked out to congratulate him. Woods' mom, who drove nearly two hours, was also there to share in his accomplishment. Woods finished the game with nine points to close out his career with 505. Surovec later presented him with a special Mustangs basketball commemorating his achievement.

The 6'2, 165-pound Woods scored nearly two thirds (320) of his career points in a 2015-16 season in which he started 18 of 24 games and logged a team-high 691 minutes.

Woods was at his best shooting from the perimeter, but he also possessed the physical skills to drive the ball to the basket. His 13.3 points per game average was third-best on the team. For the season he shot 40% from the floor, 36% from beyond the arc and 67% from the line. He dished out a team-high 56 assists and finished second in steals with 51.

For his career Woods was 42% from the field, 35% from distance and 67% from the foul line. That amounted to a 10.3 points per game average for his two years at Montgomery. He was also credited with 128 assists and 77 steals.

Saturday marked a bittersweet afternooon for Woods. While his team fell short on the scoreboard 106-100, Woods' milestone gave his team something to celebrate as the season came to a close.

A graduate of Upper Dublin High School, Woods is a Liberal Studies major at Montgomery County Community College.
