Recap: Mustangs Unable To Overcome Mistakes, Griffins

BLUE BELL, Pa. - The men's basketball team was unable to overcome 27 turnovers in losing 91-71 to the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University (JV) in a non-conference game Thursday evening.

The Mustangs stood toe to toe with the Griffins for much of the first half and were within 10 points at halftime as Gwynedd Mercy took a 50-40 lead into the locker room at halftime. But things unraveled in the second half thanks largely to turnovers.

"Turnovers continue to be a major problem for us," said head coach Denny Surovec. "We played well in spurts, but we won't win games until we learn how to take care of the basketball."

That was especially true against a tenacious and hungry group from Gwynedd Mercy which seemed to pounce on every loose ball and had answers for the Mustangs at both ends of the floor.

Kevin Woods came off the bench to lead the Mustangs with 25 points, while Ryan Brennan added 12 in a reserve role. Tyler Armstrong and Cameron Green combined for 15 of the team's 40 rebounds.

Montgomery shot just over 37 percent from the field, making 26 of 69 shots. The Mustangs drained 13 of 28 shots from beyond the arc, including nine from the duo of Woods and Brennan. The team made good on 50 percent of its free throws.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 3-9 overall with two games remaining before the holiday break.

Montgomery is back in action Saturday afternoon at Johnson College.
