Panthers Inch Past Mustangs
Blue Bell, Pa. - The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs mens soccer team lost a wild match against the Passaic County Community College Panthers 4-5 in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010.
Brian Saladarigga of the Panthers opened the scoring by converting a pass from Franco Lopez in the 8th minute of the contest to give Passaic an early 1-0 lead. The Mustangs answered back in the 30th minute when Miguel Cortes finished a ball from the top of the box. Eight minutes later a miscommunication between the Mustangs goalkeeper and a defender allowed Besmir Dzila to score for the Panthers in a scramble in front of the net. Down 2-1, the Mustangs did not give up, tying the game right before half time with a converted penalty kick by Jay Natale.
Dzila opened the second half scoring on a 30 yard shot to the near post to advance the Panthers to a 3-2 lead. In the 58th minute, the Panthers boosted that lead to 4-2 with a six yard shot by James Sanchez. Ten minutes later the Panthers appeared to steal the game completely with another goal, scored by Lopez. However, the Mustangs responded immediately with a goal by Cortes, which was soon followed by a goal from Lekan King. Down only by one, the Mustangs battled to tied up the game, sending some close chances to the Panthers net, but the clock ran out to a 5-4 Passaic victory.
The Mustangs are now 0-3-1 overall and 0-3-1 NJCAA RXIX Division III. Next the Mustangs will host Bucks County Community College on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
