Game Recap: Mustangs Earn 5-1 Victory Over Phantoms

The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs hosted the Delaware County Community College Phantoms in the men's soccer home opener on Thursday Aug. 29, 2013. In a rousing display of athleticism and enthusiasm, the Mustangs earned a stunning 5-1 victory over the visiting Phantoms.

The Mustangs started out strong, earning four goals in the first half. Freshman striker Joseph Lasher notched the first goal for the Mustangs, sailing in a pass from fellow freshman forward Moisei Scutaru at 6:00. Eleven minutes later Lasher put the Mustangs up 2-0, knocking in his second goal off a pass from freshman midfielder Austin Messner.

Dominating play and generating numerous scoring chances, the Mustangs continued to pressure the Phantoms offensively. At the 24:00 mark, sophomore captain Brian Shim touched in an unassisted goal to put the Mustangs ahead by three. Fellow captain, sophomore Mark Stoughton, added to the lead with a successful penalty shot with just under four minutes left in the first half.

Down 0-4 going into the second half of the game, the Phantoms fought hard to come from behind. However, the Mustangs were well-conditioned and able to keep up a fast paced style of play, thwarting a number of Phantom chances. At 67:00 Lasher tallied his third goal of the game, securing a hat trick in his first ever collegiate soccer appearance. Freshman midfielder Jeremiah Garcia earned the assist in the play.

The Mustangs displayed strong soccer through the remainder of the second half. However, the Phantoms kept up their intensity and managed to break the shut out with just 8:00 left in play. Putting his team on the board at 82:00, Phantoms forward Abdoulaye Fofana snuck by the Mustangs' defense for a break away goal.

Mustangs Head Soccer Coach, Obed Arango, was pleased with his team's performance. "Today these guys played with determination and with passion," he noted. "It was a very good day of soccer."
