Game Recap: Mustangs, Centurions Settle for 1-1 2OT Tie

The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men's soccer team hosted the Centurions of Bucks County Community College in an intense EPAC match up Thursday.

The Mustangs dominated play from the opening whistle with four opportunities on goal and majority possession in the first half. In the 43rd minute of play, the Mustangs earned a free kick which resulted in a goal from freshman forward Sean Treacy.

Things took a turn for the Mustangs when sophomore captain and central defender Brian Shim suffered an ankle injury that put him out of the game. Mustangs Head Coach Obed Arango had to shift positions, putting Treacy in the back, to compensate for the loss of one of the Mustangs' strongest defenders.

Going into the second half Coach Arango anticipated Bucks' move to put in three strikers, but with the loss of Shim, the Mustangs could not adjust in time, allowing a goal just two minutes into play. The game was tied up 1-1 for the remainder of regular play as the teams battled physically to steal the win.

The Centurions were able to pull off more shots on goal in the second half, dominating the play with long kicks and in-the-air ball movement. However, the efforts fell short of securing the victory. The teams went into double overtime, playing very evenly. Ultimately, neither team was able to convert a goal and after 110 minutes of play, the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Coach Arango expressed appreciation for both teams' efforts on the field. "The Mustangs displayed character and intensity. The team was able to adjust to diversity of formations in order to take control of the game. I think the score reflects the performance of both teams. Each team dominated a half; the Mustangs had the first half, while the Centurions had the second."

The Mustangs will now move forward with a 1-1-1 record. Next, the team will face the Manor College Blue Jays at an away game on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
