Recap: 'Complete Game' Effort As Mustangs Knock Off Bucks

NEWTOWN, Pa. – Four wins in his team's first five matches was a nice start. But Head Coach Tom Haney was still looking for a complete game effort from his young team.

His players responded with just that on Thursday afternoon, posting a 3-1 victory at Bucks County Community College against the defending EPAC champions. The win was Montgomery's fourth straight.

Entering Thursday's action, the Centurions had beaten each of its opponents by three goals or more and were undefeated in both Region XIX and EPAC play. In fact, Bucks' men's soccer program was one of four Region XIX teams earning recognition in NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer poll earlier in the week.

"Bucks is very talented," said Mustangs Head Men's Soccer Coach Tom Haney. "But our entire team remained disciplined and followed the game plan for the full 90 minutes and were rewarded in the end."

Montgomery jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than eight minutes into the match with Tenzin Wangyal drilling an 18-yard shot in the bottom left corner of the net past Bucks goalkeeper Nikolai Tsekirov.

In the 36th minute, the Mustangs added to their lead when first-year player Ed Lohmeyer powered home a header from Geoffrey Horrocks' corner kick.

Montgomery first-year goalkeeper Hunter Standnycki stood tall throughout, keeping the Centurions off the scoreboard until the 65th minute when Reynaldo Bonilla scored on a penalty kick.

The game went back and forth from there as the teams battled up and down the pitch. Then, in the 84th minute, Montgomery struck the decisive blow. First-year player Ariel Gaviria, who assisted on the first goal, fired a shot from the right corner of the 18 to the upper left corner of the goal. Dante Prosanti assisted on the goal.

Four yellow cards were issued in the match, with Gaviria and Jaron Kicinski drawing cautions for the Mustangs and Bonilla and Tyler Rost receiving them for Bucks.

"This was a big win for our program," said Haney.

Indeed it was. Montgomery's last win over Bucks in men's soccer came way back on Sept. 13, 2011 at Bucks. And just last season, the Centurions outscored the Mustangs 12-0 in their two matches.

"This was a great team effort," Haney said. "This was our first complete game of the year."

Haney and Co. sit at 5-1 in Region XIX and EPAC play.

The rematch of these 2015 squads will be Thursday, Oct. 1 at 3:30 pm at the Central Campus in Blue Bell, Pa.
