Special Season Ends With Loss In Region Semifinals

TOMS RIVER, NJ - The men's soccer team's run at NJCAA glory ended with a 4-1 loss in the Regional semifinals to fourth-ranked Ocean County College on Thursday afternoon.

Freshman Igor McVeagh scored the lone goal for the fifth-ranked Mustangs in the 67th minute. Unfortunately, it came with his team already trailing 3-0.

The Vikings wasted little time jumping on the Mustangs, finding the back of the net twice within the first 10 minutes of the match. Ocean added another tally in the 23rd minute and was cruising 3-0 at halftime thanks in part to a pair of goals by Ocean's Jack Flynn.

But Montgomery refused to just roll over. Ed Lohmeyer's hard work set up McVeagh's goal and the Mustangs were down a pair with 23 minutes remaining.

Eleven minutes later, Ocean's Jeffrey Arevalo responded to seal the 4-1 for the host Vikings.

Hunter Standnycki recorded 6 saves in goal for Montgomery.

The Mustangs finish the season with a record of 11-4-0, a share of the EPAC championship and a playoff victory -- all positives first-year head coach Tom Haney can build on for next season.

"Obviously, it was a tough way to end the season," Haney said. "But I am extremely proud of all these young men and the effort they put forth this season. We have established something here that we can build upon and we should have a good number of returning players next season to help push our program forward as we strive to contend for a title."
