Recap: Women No Match For Vikings

TOMS RIVER, NJ - Jessica Spano's sixth double-double of the season was the lone bright spot as the women's basketball team was overwhelmed 88-38 by GSAC powerhouse Ocean County College in Region XIX action Saturday.

"Ocean is one of the top teams in the GSAC and it demonstrated that today," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Francine Roseman. "The numbers tell the story. We couldn't keep up offensively with Ocean. The Vikings shot over 50 percent, while we shot around 20 percent."

The Vikings stormed out to a 30-13 lead after just one quarter. They outscored the Mustangs 50-15 over the next two quarters in cruising to victory.

The trio of Spano, Alison Henning and Anna Morgan accounted for 12 of Montgomery's 15 field goals, including three from beyond the arc. However, the team only had six opportunities from the foul line.

Ocean, meanwhile, converted 22 more field goals on two less shots and made eight of 12 free throws. The Vikings drained six of their 24 attempts from three-point range.

Spano scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Montgomery, while Henning and Morgan added 10 points apiece to account for much of their team's scoring. Henning placed in double figures for a third straight game and the sixth time in her last seven outings. Henning also dished out five assists.

Lauren Lamastra led the Vikings with a game-high 27 points, while Nicole Gardner and April Szymczyk each recorded a double-double.

Despite the lopsided score, Roseman tried to keep things in perspective and positive following the game.

"This team continues to push forward and battle regardless of the opponent," Roseman said. "That's something they can be proud of."

The women close out the home portion of their schedule Tuesday at 6 pm when they host Division II Manor College.
