Recap: Off Night Shooting Dooms Women In Loss

BLACKWOOD, NJ - The women's basketball team had an off-night shooting the ball in its game against Camden County College and still almost escaped with a victory. Instead the Cougars snapped the Mustangs' two-game win streak with a 58-54 win in Region XIX play Tuesday evening.

Montgomery Head Women's Basketball Coach Francine Roseman acknowledged her team's offensive struggles against Camden County.

"We had a lot of good looks at the basket, but we couldn't get things to fall," said Roseman. "Some nights you have that, and it was one of those nights for us."

Indeed it was as the Mustangs connected on just 22 of 106 shots. The Cougars, meanwhile, converted one more field goal on just 47 shot attempts. Montgomery's Linda Sobeck drained the lone three-pointer in the contest, but the missed shots carried over to the foul line where the Mustangs were 9 for 28.

Camden led 29-17 at halftime. But the visiting Mustangs gave the Cougars all they could handle in the second half and the game was there for the taking for the Mustangs who made up for their lack of shooting prowess with a strong defensive effort.

Jessica Spano and Sobeck each recorded a double-double, with 18 and 15 points respectively. Each pulled down 11 rebounds. Marisa Christensen led the Mustangs with 5 steals and added 7 rebounds. The Cougars placed three players in double figures.

Montgomery forced 37 turnovers but also gave it up 32 times, while the Cougars held a 56-49 advantage in the rebound department.

"This was one that got away and really leaves a bad taste in your mouth," Roseman said. "But there's no time to dwell on it, and we won't. There's plenty of season left."

The Mustangs sit at 3-6 overall and in Region play. Next up: a home game Thursday vs. Division II Valley Forge Military College.
