The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women's soccer team fell 1-2 to the Manor College Blue Jays in overtime Tuesday.
The Mustangs got off to a solid start, dominating play and battling hard against the aggressive Blue Jays squad. But midway through the first half, the Blue Jays tossed a corner kick into the box, which deflected off a Mustangs defender and into the net.
The misstep did not shake the Mustangs, who stepped up and landed a solid goal of their own when Stephanie Martinez scored from 20 yards out.
The score remained tied throughout regulation play, sending the teams into overtime. The Blue Jays sealed the sudden-death victory with a goal early in the extra time period.
Mustangs Head Coach Tom Haney said of the effort, "The team played an outstanding game, possessing the ball for a large portion of the game. We did not allow their attackers to get behind our defense during regulation play. We got unlucky with the ball that deflected off our defender to put Manor on the board."
Haney noted that the game was a success for the Mustangs. "We revisted defending at practice and all the players stepped up. I was very proud of my team's effort."
