Game Recap: Sejda Scores in Loss to No. 1 Brookdale

The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs faced steep competition against the Nationally Ranked No. 1 Brookdale Community College Jersey Blues Saturday.

The Mustangs put forth a valiant effort against the soccer powerhouse, but couldn't come up with the win.

"It's a hard thing to do, stepping on the field against such a strong program," said Assistant Coach Amanda Rogers. "The ladies on our team showed a lot of character, playing with confidence and determination."

While down 0-7 in the second half, that determination and confidence paid off for the Mustangs, who earned a kick off a foul call deep in the Jersey Blues' defensive territory. Sophomore captain Taylor Sejda lined up for the kick, nailing the ball into the far upper corner of the net to break the shut out.

"It's a big deal that Taylor scored on the Blues," said Rogers. "The team has outscored its opponents 73-5 this season, only allowing in goals from four teams. To be one of those four teams is a huge testament to Taylor's shooting ability."

Sejda was honored during the game, along with fellow sophomore captain Emily McKay, in the team's annual Sophomore Day celebration. During the celebration, the second year players on both teams were recognized for their contributions and commitment to their respective programs.

"Before the game, we announce the names and stats for each of the second year players and give them flowers," said Head Coach Tom Haney. "It's a gesture of sportsmanship and appreciation to do this for both teams and it lets our girls know that we are proud of them for all their hard work."

The game concluded in an 8-1 victory for Brookdale. While disappointed with the loss, the Mustangs saw bright spots in the ruined shut out and in honoring Sejda and McKay. The team's last game of the season is away at Cumberland County College on Wednesday Oct. 9th.
