Game Recap: Volleyball Tops DII Lackawanna

The Mustangs volleyball team opened its 2012 season with a tough match up against NJCAA Division II Lackawanna College Tuesday night. 

In the four-set series, the Mustangs came away with a 3-1 win. In the first match the Mustangs started on a good note but were overtaken by Lackawanna 25-27 in a back and forth battle. Determined to make up the loss, the Mustangs rallied to win the next three matches 25-20, 25-19 and 25-15. The Mustangs played each match with progressive intensity, finishing the evening with a .400 hitting average in the final game.

In total the Mustangs racked up 22 aces in the effort. Kendall GazzoElizabeth Herezi and Brianna Rodriguez each collected 9 kills. Setter Nikki Reichert came up big with 29 assists and also led in digs with 10. Gazzo and libero Kelsey Kowalick also tallied eight digs apeice. 

Rodriguez led in aces with 5, followed by three other Mustangs who chipped in four each; Gazzo, Chelsea Knowles and Alex Griffin.

Head Coach Misti Volpe views the team's performance as a sign of a successful season ahead. "The girls put forth a good overall effort and did a great job focusing on precision and finishing in the last game. By carrying that through the season, I expect strong finishes to all our matches."
